Congressman Russell Condemns Executive Action Release of Guantanamo Detainees

January 5, 2017
Press Release

Washington, DC – Congressman Steve Russell (OK-5), a member of the House Armed Services Committee and a retired Lt. Col who served 21 years in the Army, issued the following statement condemning the latest release of four detainees from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay by an executive order:

I am severely disappointed that the President would once again jeopardize the safety of the American people by releasing four more terrorist detainees who were held at Guantanamo by executive action. The best way to determine the innocence or guilt of these detainees is through military tribunals and the court system that is already in place. The executive action of releasing detainees has created uncertainty, resulted in detainees continuing to commit terrorist acts upon release, and could put American and other lives in danger. The military justice system is fair and just, and it should be the system chosen to clear the final detainees held at Guantanamo.”
