ICYMI – Steve Russell on C-SPAN - Recaps First Term in Congress

December 23, 2016
Press Release

Del City, OK – Congressman Steve Russell (OK-5) spoke with C-SPAN’s Bill Scanlan to talk about the importance of checks and balances, bipartisanship in Congress, and his biggest accomplishments in his first term in office.

On Checks and Balances in Government:

Congressman Russell: “Our republic has seen the pendulum swing to government and the some rare occasions, all the legislative branches being held by the same political party. We saw long stretches of a time in the 1930's and 1940's period. I think as we look at it, our republic is pretty resilient. We have a judiciary branch, I think we have to respect the judicial branch as an equal branch of government. A lot of time we are unhappy with decisions that are made for one reason or another, but it just plays into the checks and balance system. These appointments will be important that the will of the American people has a chance to influence those checks and balances.”

On Bipartisanship:

Congressman Russell: “I have a handwritten note from President Obama. I take great pride in that. We saw eye to eye on a couple of things, many things we did not. One thing I learned, you can always find common ground when people are in conflict. There is always something they agree to focus on. You try not to highlight the differences if you can.”

On Accomplishments:

Congressman Russell: “We have certainly become known for our targeting of waste, continuing Oklahoma's delegation legacy from the great Dr. Tom Coburn, and we have taken that mantle and honored to do it and we have also turned that into true reform speaking of bipartisanship, working with Matt Cartwright, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, he and I worked as cosponsors of the MEGABYTE Act, which estimated will save $4 billion just in software licensure reform. Well even in this town, $4 billion is a real money that gets people's attention. So, you can always find overlapping ground.”
