Tuesday, July 28th, the National Security Subcommittee of House Oversight held a hearing to better understand the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) Movement, and review the economic impact of the Movement on American and Israeli businesses.  The minority party called as a witness Matthew Duss, the President Foundation for Middle East Peace.  Duss stated in his testimony that “Arguments by the BDS… should be addressed, in the American tradition, with thoughtful, considered and ethical counter arguments.” When Congressman Steve Russell (OK-5) took to questioning, he exposed that Duss and his family are known for inflammatory tactics and publications, even going so far as calling Israeli politicians rapists and using Nazi-era propaganda posters.

After questioning the three other witnesses, Daniel Birnbaum, the CEO of Soda Stream International Ltd, Mark Dubowitz, the Executive Director of the Foundation for Defense Democracies, and Eugene Kantorovich, a Professor of Law from Northwestern University, School of Law, Congressman Russell said of Matthew Duss, “I am somewhat troubled that we have before us today someone elevated to come and testify before Congress that might have such a closet to be examined.  And I find that these types of approaches to the BDS problem to be unthoughtful, ill-considered, and of questionable tactics, and as a result, I really don’t want to hear any more of what he might have to say in this hearing.”
